Each bar is one start month. Money waiting to be invested earns 3-month Treasury bill interest, and the twelfth purchase sweeps in that interest, so both are fully invested after a year. From then on they hold the same fund, so the gap between them never changes.

Every value is in today's dollars, adjusted with the CPI-U. From March 2006 every holding except cash is a real fund: SPY, VTI, VGTSX, VBMFX, TLT, IEF, SHY, GLD and DBC. Earlier months, shaded on the chart, are rebuilt from index and Treasury yield data, minus each fund's fee. Each portfolio is rebalanced every December, with no taxes or trading costs.
